Rifling through the pages of the latest Golfsmith, Edwin Watts, or TGW catalog, it’s hard not to dream about walking up to the first tee box and drawing a fancy new driver from your bag. For many golfers, however, the prices of these costly new toys is simply too prohibitive. Take for example the new TaylorMade R5 Dual driver, which not only comes with “dual launch control ports,” but includes a price tag of nearly $600 as well.

There is a more budget-friendly alternative, however. For some, it may seem like the golf world’s equivalent of a shady character peddling imitation watches on the side of the street. However, the world of “knock-off” golf clubs has moved from weekend

duffers assembling clubs in their basements to big business. Thanks to retailers who specialize in these clubs, the more politically correct title of “clone clubs” has been adopted as well.

Wilson , Callaway, Titleist, Adams , King Cobra, Yonex, Ping , Taylor Made, Mizuno, and Spaulding are all excellent name brand golf clubs. As a beginning or even a professional golfer, trying to decide which set of golf clubs to purchase, however, may often feel like taking a shot in the dark. In a society that is increasing name brand conscious, many of us are tempted to simply buy what everyone else seems to be buying. Selecting the proper golf clubs, however, is something that you shouldn’t do without having a good idea of what types are available and what the specific use of each club is. Using the proper golf club can and will greatly improve your game.

Other important things to consider are choosing the right lie and the right shaft flex. The flexibility of the shaft of the club is known as the bend or flex. If you’re a powerful swinger, you’ll have more control with less bend. Beginners and less powerful swingers are better off with more flexibility.

When it comes to golf clubs you can pretty much spend as much as you want to get a good set of clubs. Even then there is no guarantee that you will end up with a good golf swing and lower scores. The most popular brand name clubs today are TaylorMade, Ping, Calloway and Cobra. There are also many flash in the pan companies that come and go every few years. Competition is fierce with each company developing new designs, materials and of course the all important style and look. They keep a keen eye on the competition and are quick to copy or improve on a new popular feature or design. When golfers describe golf clubs it is

usually in terms of features or special design.

If you read any of the popular golf magazines, you know that low handicappers are told to look for shafts that have low torque and a little more weight for stability. Ultra light shafts with higher torque are supposed to be aimed squarely at slow swing speed players.

So it was surprising to read that Stuart Appleby was using a Fujikura Six in his driver. His clubs were profiled in one of Golf Digest s What s in My Bag features.

The Fujikura Six is a 55 gram shaft with about 4.5* of torque. Not many club fitters would put a player like Appleby in that shaft. You might have even toyed with the idea

of using a super light, but just couldn t bring yourself to try one.
